Analysis Exercise
The Interiority Translation. Once a week, take a scene in which Cal only reacts (scenes 3, 4, or 9 are ideal) and write a one-page version in his first-person present tense: capture his heart rate, breath, the specific thought he is trying not to think, and the physical sensations he is suppressing. Then close that draft and rewrite the same beat in the script's present-tense action style, translating only the two or three most potent internal details into concrete physical tells—his finger hovering over the shutter, a held breath, his hand dropping the print.
The Silent Rewrite. Pick a dialogue-first scene (scenes 15, 24, or 26 work well) and rewrite it with zero dialogue, using only action lines, objects, and blocking to communicate the same information and conflict. If you need a moment of meaning, give it an object—the envelope, the photograph, a phone screen—and let the camera find it.
The Wrong Choice. Identify a moment where Cal is carried by events—for example, uploading the 25th photo, or entering the abandoned house. Rewrite it so Cal makes an active, flawed decision: he deletes the photo, lies to Nina, closes the door anyway, or chooses the app over an important phone call. Then write the immediate consequence of that choice.
