- The sequence in the dining room could be tightened to maintain a stronger narrative momentum. While the character interactions are well-written, the pacing feels slightly uneven at times, and some of the dialogue could be trimmed to avoid repetition. medium ( Scene 39 (79) )
- The conversation between Lawrence, Bellini, and Sabbadin in the staircase feels slightly contrived, with the characters' motivations and alliances shifting a bit too abruptly. A more gradual buildup of the political tensions within the Conclave could strengthen this sequence. medium ( Scene 28 (64) )
- While the screenplay effectively explores the personal journeys of the cardinal-electors, there could be opportunities to further develop the supporting characters, such as the nuns and the Vatican staff, to add additional layers of complexity to the story. low ( Scene )
- The screenplay could potentially benefit from a more overt exploration of the broader social and political implications of the Church's leadership transition, beyond the immediate concerns of the Conclave. - Lack of diverse representation While the screenplay does a commendable job of exploring the personal and political dynamics within the College of Cardinals, there is a relative lack of representation of diverse perspectives and backgrounds among the supporting characters. The majority of the cardinal-electors are depicted as older, European men, with limited insight into the experiences and challenges facing women, younger generations, or non-European members of the Church. Incorporating a more diverse cast of characters could enhance the screenplay's ability to reflect the true diversity of the Catholic Church and its global reach. medium
- Uneven pacing While the overall pacing of the screenplay is generally strong, there are a few instances where the narrative momentum slows down, particularly in some of the dialogue-heavy sequences. For example, the conversation between Lawrence, Bellini, and Sabbadin in the staircase (scene 91) feels slightly drawn out, with the characters' motivations and alliances shifting a bit too abruptly. Character Cardinal Lawrence
Description Lawrence's sudden shifts between exhaustion, decisive action, and prayer feel jarring. His internal conflict isn't consistently or convincingly portrayed, making his actions sometimes appear driven by plot convenience rather than genuine character motivations. The juxtaposition of his exhaustion and his determined actions feels contrived.
( Scene 41 Scene 42 Scene 73 Scene 100 Scene 102 ) -
Character Cardinal Bellini
Description Bellini's sudden outburst of anger at Lawrence in sequence 70 feels out of character given their close friendship. His later actions in sequence 106, where he vacillates between wanting to expose Tremblay and protecting the Church's image, lack consistency and clarity of motivation.
( Scene 70 Scene 106 ) -
Character Archbishop Wozniak
Description Wozniak's revelation about Tremblay's dismissal feels incredibly late in the narrative and lacks sufficient prior characterization to justify such a significant act. His motivation is unclear, and the timing feels manipulative for plot purposes.
( Scene 26 ) -
Character Sister Agnes
Description Sister Agnes's sudden and decisive intervention at the end feels deus ex machina. Her knowledge and actions lack sufficient buildup and seem primarily designed to resolve the plot rather than stemming from established character traits. Her unwavering control and access to information are not previously established.
( Scene 97 Scene 108 Scene 110 )
-
Description The opening scene with the cracked window pane feels disjointed and lacks immediate context. Its connection to the overall narrative is not immediately clear.
( Scene 1 (2) ) -
Description The sudden shift to a public discussion of the bomb attack in sequence 117 feels jarring. The transition is not well-handled, and the sudden access to information about the global impact lacks narrative preparation. The scene feels too abrupt.
( Scene 117 ) -
Description Benitez's revelation about his intersex condition feels unearned and tacked on. The narrative doesn't adequately prepare for this development, and it lacks sufficient emotional weight or resonance.
( Scene 125 )
-
Description The plot hinges on the alleged dismissal of Tremblay by the Pope, but the evidence is flimsy and contradictory. Wozniak's testimony is unreliable and unsupported, and Tremblay's denial lacks sufficient consequences. The resolution with Sister Agnes feels too easy and convenient.
( Scene 26 Scene 39 ) -
Description The sudden appearance of Cardinal Benitez is unexplained. His creation in pectore and his later actions raise questions about the believability of this narrative device.
( Scene 32 )
-
Element Repeating the Conclave voting process
( Scene 58 Scene 75 Scene 76 Scene 87 Scene 121 )
Suggestion Streamline the repetitive voting sequences. Use montage or other cinematic techniques to convey the passage of time and the unfolding results without detailed repetition of each ballot. -
Element Overuse of Italian and Latin
( Scene 11 Scene 37 Scene 57 Scene 58 )
Suggestion While using multiple languages adds flavor, the frequent switching and the extensive use of subtitled dialogue could be toned down for improved pacing and clarity. Prioritize scenes where the language choice adds character or significance.

Emotional Analysis
Emotional Variety
Critique
- The screenplay exhibits a range of emotions, primarily focusing on sadness, empathy, and tension, particularly in scenes surrounding the Pope's death and the subsequent conclave. However, there are moments where the emotional tone feels repetitive, especially in scenes 2, 3, and 4, which all heavily emphasize grief and somber reflection.
- Scenes such as 5 and 6 introduce slight variations in emotional tone but still remain largely focused on sadness and tension. The emotional landscape could benefit from more diverse emotional experiences, such as moments of levity or hope, to break the heaviness.
- The emotional variety is somewhat limited, with many scenes relying on similar emotional beats, particularly around the themes of loss and responsibility. This could lead to emotional fatigue for the audience.
Suggestions
- Incorporate moments of humor or light-heartedness in scenes like 7 and 10, where the cardinals interact in a more casual setting. This could provide a necessary emotional break and enhance engagement.
- Introduce scenes that explore themes of hope or resilience, particularly in the lead-up to the conclave, to balance the prevailing sadness and tension. For example, a scene where the cardinals share personal stories of faith could evoke a sense of unity and optimism.
Emotional Intensity Distribution
Critique
- The emotional intensity distribution is uneven, with peaks of high tension and sadness in scenes like 12 and 54, while other scenes, such as 20 and 21, feel less impactful emotionally. This inconsistency can lead to moments of emotional fatigue.
- Scenes 26 and 35 showcase significant emotional stakes, but the intensity drops in subsequent scenes, such as 42 and 43, where the focus shifts to logistical discussions rather than emotional engagement.
- The screenplay could benefit from a more balanced emotional arc, where moments of high intensity are followed by quieter, reflective scenes to allow the audience to process the emotions.
Suggestions
- Consider adjusting the pacing of emotional scenes by interspersing quieter moments after high-intensity scenes, such as placing a reflective scene after the explosive moments in scenes 52 and 53.
- Enhance the emotional impact of key scenes by building up to them with increased tension in preceding scenes, ensuring that the audience is fully engaged and invested in the characters' emotional journeys.
Empathy For Characters
Critique
- Empathy for characters like Lawrence and Bellini is strong in scenes where their internal struggles are highlighted, such as in scenes 8 and 31. However, empathy for characters like Tremblay and Tedesco feels weaker, as their motivations are less explored.
- Scenes 12 and 49 provide opportunities for deeper emotional connection, but the focus on political maneuvering can detract from the audience's ability to empathize with the characters' personal struggles.
- The emotional depth of secondary characters could be enhanced to foster greater empathy, particularly for those involved in the political dynamics of the conclave.
Suggestions
- Add backstory or personal stakes for characters like Tremblay and Tedesco in key scenes, such as 19 and 49, to provide context for their actions and decisions, allowing the audience to empathize with their struggles.
- Incorporate moments of vulnerability for all characters, not just the protagonists, to create a more rounded emotional experience. For instance, showing Tedesco's fears about the Church's future could enhance empathy for his character.
Emotional Impact Of Key Scenes
Critique
- Key scenes such as 56 and 57 deliver strong emotional impacts, particularly with the election of Benitez as Pope. However, some pivotal moments, like the confrontation in scene 47, feel underwhelming and lack the emotional punch needed to resonate with the audience.
- Scenes that should evoke high emotional stakes, such as 54 and 58, sometimes fall flat due to a lack of character depth or connection, leading to missed opportunities for impactful storytelling.
- The emotional resonance in climactic scenes could be heightened by ensuring that the stakes are clearly defined and that the audience is emotionally invested in the outcomes.
Suggestions
- Enhance the emotional impact of confrontational scenes, like 47, by incorporating more visceral reactions from the characters, allowing the audience to feel the weight of the accusations and the stakes involved.
- In key moments, such as the announcement of the new Pope in scene 56, consider adding more emotional dialogue or reactions from the cardinals to amplify the sense of relief and joy, ensuring that the audience feels the significance of the moment.
Complex Emotional Layers
Critique
- Many scenes, particularly those focused on grief and loss, feel one-dimensional emotionally, primarily relying on sadness without exploring the complexities of the characters' feelings. For example, scenes 2 and 3 could benefit from additional emotional layers.
- While some scenes, like 31 and 59, introduce complex emotional dynamics, others lack sub-emotions that could enrich the audience's experience, leading to a more simplistic portrayal of character struggles.
- The screenplay could better utilize sub-emotions, such as guilt, regret, or hope, to create a more nuanced emotional landscape.
Suggestions
- Introduce sub-emotions in scenes that focus on grief, such as adding moments of nostalgia or regret in scenes 2 and 3, to deepen the emotional experience and provide a more rounded portrayal of the characters' feelings.
- Incorporate dialogue that reflects the characters' internal conflicts and complexities, particularly in scenes like 12 and 49, to enhance the emotional layers and create a richer narrative.
Additional Critique
Character Development
Critiques
- Some characters, particularly secondary ones like Tremblay and Tedesco, lack depth and complexity, making it difficult for the audience to empathize with their struggles.
- The screenplay often focuses on the political dynamics of the conclave at the expense of character backstories, which could enhance emotional engagement.
- Key moments of vulnerability are often reserved for primary characters, leaving secondary characters feeling flat and underdeveloped.
Suggestions
- Incorporate backstory elements for secondary characters in key scenes, such as 19 and 49, to provide context for their motivations and enhance audience empathy.
- Allow for moments of vulnerability for all characters, not just the protagonists, to create a more rounded emotional experience and deepen the audience's connection to the narrative.
Pacing and Emotional Flow
Critiques
- The pacing of emotional scenes can feel uneven, with some moments dragging on while others rush through significant emotional beats, leading to a disjointed viewing experience.
- Scenes that should provide emotional relief often follow high-tension moments too closely, preventing the audience from fully processing the emotions before moving on.
- The emotional flow could benefit from a more deliberate structure that allows for peaks and valleys in intensity, giving the audience time to breathe.
Suggestions
- Consider restructuring the screenplay to create a more balanced emotional arc, where high-intensity scenes are followed by quieter, reflective moments to allow the audience to process the emotions.
- Incorporate transitional scenes that provide emotional relief after high-stakes moments, ensuring that the audience has time to absorb the weight of the narrative before moving on.
| Goals and Philosophical Conflict | |
|---|---|
| internal Goals | Throughout the screenplay, Lawrence's internal goals evolve from seeking control and stability in the wake of the Pope's death to grappling with his own faith and identity as he faces the pressures of potential papacy and the moral implications of the election process. His journey reflects a struggle for personal integrity amidst institutional demands. |
| External Goals | Lawrence's external goals shift from handling the logistics surrounding the Pope's death to steering the turbulent waters of the papal conclave, actively engaging in political maneuvering and managing relationships among the cardinals, culminating in his support for a worthy successor. |
| Philosophical Conflict | The overarching philosophical conflict revolves around the tension between authenticity and institutional obligation, exemplified through Lawrence's struggle to balance the need for personal integrity against the pressures and expectations of the Church hierarchy. |
Character Development Contribution: The evolution of Lawrence's goals reflects his deepening self-awareness and understanding of his role within the Church, highlighting his transition from a desire for power to embracing a more compassionate and authentic leadership style.
Narrative Structure Contribution: Lawrence's internal and external goals drive the plot forward by creating tension and conflict within the conclave, thereby structuring the narrative around key decision-making moments that emphasize character choices and their consequences.
Thematic Depth Contribution: The interplay of Lawrence's goals and the philosophical conflicts enhances the thematic depth by exploring the complexities of faith, identity, and the moral responsibilities carried by individuals within powerful institutions.

Scene Analysis
📊 Understanding Your Percentile Rankings
Your scene scores are compared against professional produced screenplays in our vault (The Matrix, Breaking Bad, etc.). The percentile shows where you rank compared to these films.
Example: A score of 8.5 in Dialogue might be 85th percentile (strong!), while the same 8.5 in Conflict might only be 50th percentile (needs work). The percentile tells you what your raw scores actually mean.
Hover over each axis on the radar chart to see what that category measures and why it matters.
Scenes are rated on many criteria. The goal isn't to try to maximize every number; it's to make you aware of what's happening in your scenes. You might have very good reasons to have character development but not advance the story, or have a scene without conflict. Obviously if your dialogue is really bad, you should probably look into that.

Sequence Analysis
📊 Understanding Your Percentile Rankings
Your sequence scores are compared against professional produced screenplays in our vault (The Matrix, Breaking Bad, etc.). The percentile shows where you rank compared to these films.
Example: A score of 8.5 in Plot Progress might be 85th percentile (strong!), while the same 8.5 in Stakes might only be 50th percentile (needs work). The percentile tells you what your raw scores actually mean.
Hover over each axis on the radar chart to see what that category measures and why it matters.
Sequences are analyzed as Hero Goal Sequences as defined by Eric Edson—structural units where your protagonist pursues a specific goal. These are rated on multiple criteria including momentum, pressure, character development, and narrative cohesion. The goal isn't to maximize every number; it's to make you aware of what's happening in each sequence. You might have very good reasons for a sequence to focus on character leverage rather than plot escalation, or to build emotional impact without heavy conflict. Use these metrics to understand your story's rhythm and identify where adjustments might strengthen your narrative.

Act One — Seq 1: Responding to the Pope's Death
Cardinal Lawrence is urgently summoned to the Vatican where he comforts grieving staff, participates in the Pope's final liturgy, oversees the sealing of the papal suite, and ensures the dignified removal of the body. He learns critical details about the Pope's secret heart condition and navigates early tensions among senior cardinals regarding responsibility for the death. The sequence concludes with the Pope's body being transported away and a three-week time jump signaling the end of immediate crisis management.
Dramatic Question
- (9-10) The evocative, almost reverential description of the Pope's deathbed and the somber ritual of the cardinals' prayers creates a palpable sense of gravity and import.high
- (10-11) The interactions between Lawrence, Bellini, and Tremblay effectively establish the political tensions and competing agendas within the College of Cardinals.high
- () The screenplay's clear, succinct prose and formatting make the story easy to visualize and follow.medium
- (3A, 3B, 4) The pacing sags in the middle of the sequence, with several slow-moving, atmospheric scenes that don't advance the plot or build tension. These transitional moments could be tightened or condensed to maintain momentum.high
- (10A) The dialogue in this scene, while informative, feels a bit expository and lacks a strong dramatic hook. Reworking the exchanges to be more pointed, with clearer objectives and obstacles for the characters, would heighten the tension.medium
- () While the sequence establishes the central mystery of the Pope's death, it could do more to immediately intrigue the audience and compel them to keep reading. Adding a more pronounced dramatic question or twist would elevate the overall impact.high
- () The sequence lacks a clear, compelling narrative hook or dramatic question that draws the audience in and makes them eager to see what happens next. A stronger sense of immediate jeopardy or unresolved tension would heighten the sequence's impact.high
- (3A, 3B) The atmospheric, almost dreamlike quality of these transitional scenes could be reinforced with more evocative sensory details or a clearer thematic connection to the central conflict. As is, they feel a bit adrift from the core drama.medium

- Physical environment: The screenplay is primarily set within the Vatican City and its immediate surroundings in Rome, Italy. Locations include modern apartment blocks, quiet streets, the Papal apartments and suites (varying in levels of austerity and opulence), the Sistine Chapel, Casa Santa Marta (a residence for cardinals and nuns), the Scala Regia, Vatican Gardens, and St. Peter's Square. The physical descriptions emphasize both the ancient, historical grandeur of the Vatican (marble floors, intricate mosaics, religious artifacts, frescoes by Michelangelo) and its modern aspects (electronic security systems, modern communication devices, minibuses, helicopters).
- Culture: The dominant culture is that of the Catholic Church. This is evident in the religious rituals (liturgy, prayers, the conclave itself, papal cassocks, use of Latin), religious iconography (Pietàs, crucifixes, frescoes), and the profound religious faith of many characters. Italian culture is also present, particularly in the language used and the interactions between characters. Underlying cultural tensions exist between traditional and progressive factions within the Church.
- Society: The societal structure is firmly hierarchical, centered around the power structure of the Catholic Church. The Pope holds the ultimate authority, followed by cardinals (ranked by seniority and influence), archbishops, monsignors, priests, and nuns. Power dynamics, political maneuvering, and alliances/rivalries among these figures drive much of the narrative. The social hierarchy shapes all interactions and actions, from formal addresses ('Your Eminence') to the secretive discussions and the machinations surrounding the papal election.
- Technology: Technology plays a relatively minor role. Modern conveniences like phones, electronic security systems (jammers, surveillance), key cards, photocopiers, computers, and helicopters are present, but they do not overshadow the traditional aspects of the Vatican. The contrast between modern communication (social media trends) and the ancient traditions of the Conclave highlights the clash between old and new.
- Characters influence: The environment significantly shapes character experiences and actions. The hierarchical society creates intense pressure and constraints on the cardinals, forcing them into strategic alliances and veiled conflicts. The religious culture shapes their moral dilemmas and internal struggles. The physical environment – the grandeur and historical weight of the Vatican – enhances the sense of responsibility and solemnity surrounding their decisions. The limited technology means that personal interactions and interpersonal dynamics become central.
- Narrative contribution: The setting is integral to the narrative. The Vatican's physical space and social structure form the stage for the central conflict – the papal election. The various locations (Casa Santa Marta, Sistine Chapel, etc.) serve as settings for key events and interactions, highlighting different facets of the power struggles and moral conflicts. The time constraints of the Conclave create urgency and suspense, accelerating the plot.
- Thematic depth contribution: The unique world contributes to the film's thematic depth by exploring the tension between faith and doubt, tradition and progress, secrecy and transparency, power and humility, and the complexities of human nature within a powerful and historically significant institution. The environment acts as a powerful backdrop against which the characters' personal struggles and moral choices play out, intensifying the exploration of these themes.
| Voice Analysis | |
|---|---|
| Summary: | The writer's voice is characterized by a blend of formal, respectful dialogue with subtle undercurrents of tension and moral ambiguity. The narrative is driven by detailed, atmospheric descriptions that evoke a sense of place and time, particularly within the Vatican setting. There's a consistent focus on internal character conflicts and subtle emotional nuances, conveyed through understated gestures, pauses, and unspoken emotions as much as direct dialogue. A dry, understated humor occasionally surfaces, often in contrast to the weighty themes of faith, doubt, and power. The overall tone is one of quiet intensity and contemplative introspection, balanced with moments of sharp, tense exchanges that drive the plot forward. |
| Voice Contribution | The writer's voice contributes to the script by creating a richly textured and immersive atmosphere. The detailed descriptions and subtle characterizations build suspense and emotional depth, while the formal dialogue maintains a sense of realism and respect for the setting. The exploration of internal conflicts adds complexity to the characters and enhances thematic resonance. The blend of solemnity and understated humor prevents the narrative from becoming overly serious, offering moments of levity that counterbalance the weighty themes. The overall effect is a sophisticated and nuanced portrayal of faith, doubt, and the human condition within a powerful and historically rich setting. |
| Best Representation Scene | 8 - Reflections in the Room of Tears |
| Best Scene Explanation | This scene best encapsulates the writer's unique voice because it perfectly blends the key elements of their style. The setting is richly described and evocative of a specific atmosphere ('somber setting of the Room of Tears'). The dialogue is introspective and emotionally resonant, focusing on internal struggles and unspoken connections rather than overt conflict. The symbolism ('weight of papal vestments') adds another layer of meaning, while the overall tone is one of quiet contemplation and shared vulnerability. This scene successfully balances the formal tone with the exploration of complex emotions, characteristic of the writer's overall style. |
Style and Similarities
The screenplay predominantly features a dialogue-driven style, characterized by sharp, witty, and intellectually stimulating conversations that explore complex themes, moral dilemmas, and power dynamics. There's a strong emphasis on character development through intricate interactions and internal conflicts, often within high-stakes environments, such as institutional settings or politically charged situations. While some scenes incorporate atmospheric elements and suspenseful plot devices, the core strength lies in the rich and nuanced dialogue.
Style Similarities:
| Writer | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Aaron Sorkin | Aaron Sorkin's influence is overwhelmingly dominant across the majority of the analyzed scenes (over 40 out of 60). His signature style of fast-paced, intelligent dialogue, exploring complex character dynamics, moral dilemmas, and power struggles within institutional settings is consistently cited. The emphasis on dialogue-driven scenes, sharp wit, and exploration of ethical conflicts directly aligns with his known writing style. |
| David Mamet | David Mamet's style appears in several scenes, notably alongside Sorkin's. This suggests a blending of styles where the intense, confrontational dialogue and exploration of power dynamics characteristic of Mamet's work are integrated into the overall Sorkin-esque framework. |
Other Similarities: While Aaron Sorkin's influence is pervasive, the inclusion of other writers like Dan Brown, Christopher Nolan, Paul Schrader, Ron Howard, and Tony Kushner indicates a degree of stylistic variation across the screenplay. These variations suggest the screenplay might incorporate diverse scene types, ranging from dialogue-heavy courtroom dramas to suspenseful action sequences or scenes with a more introspective and philosophical bent. The presence of these other writers' styles offers potential for contrast and variety within the mostly Sorkin-esque structure, possibly creating a more dynamic and layered narrative.
Top Correlations and patterns found in the scenes:
| Pattern | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Consistent High Tone Scores | The 'Tone' scores are consistently high (mostly 9), suggesting a strong and consistent atmosphere throughout the screenplay. This indicates a well-established and maintained tone, which contributes to the overall quality. |
| Concept and Plot Strength | Scenes with high 'Concept' scores (8 or 9) often correlate with similarly high 'Plot' scores. This suggests a strong foundation in the core ideas of the screenplay, leading to effectively structured and engaging plotlines. |
| Character Development and Dialogue | There's a positive correlation between scenes with strong 'Characters' scores and high 'Dialogue' scores. Scenes where characters are well-developed tend to feature dialogue that enhances their personalities and drives the narrative forward. |
| 'Somber' Tone and Lower Emotional Impact | Scenes with a prevalent 'Somber' tone tend to have slightly lower 'Emotional Impact' scores compared to scenes with more diverse tonal elements. While the somber tone might contribute to the atmosphere, explore ways to inject more emotional intensity within this tone to heighten the audience's engagement. Consider whether the somberness is effectively serving the story or possibly dampening its emotional resonance. |
| High Stakes and Movement of the Plot | Scenes with high 'High Stakes' scores almost always show high scores for 'Move story forward'. This suggests that the high-stakes moments are effectively propelling the plot ahead, which is positive narrative construction. |
| Emotional Impact and Conflict | While not perfectly correlated, there's a tendency for scenes with higher 'Emotional Impact' to also have higher 'Conflict' scores. This suggests that conflict is a key driver of emotional response, but consider exploring ways to enhance emotional impact even when conflict is less explicit. |
| Character Changes and Scene Intensity | Scenes with significant 'Character Changes' tend to have higher scores across multiple aspects (especially in scenes 12, 47, 49, and 50), indicating that pivotal character moments are effectively integrated into the screenplay's overall strength. This shows the narrative is driven by significant character arcs and development. |
| Scenes 12 and 47: Narrative Peaks | Scenes 12 and 47 show exceptionally high scores across the board, suggesting potential narrative climaxes or turning points. Analyze these scenes to ensure they are appropriately positioned to maximize their impact. Pay attention to how they are paced relative to the scenes that surround them. |
| Scenes 16, 20, 51 and 56: Moments of Reflection | Scenes 16, 20, 51, and 56 have lower scores in 'Emotional Impact' and 'Dialogue', even with strong concept and character scores. This is consistent with the reflective tones; examine whether the slower pace and lower intensity are intentional and serving the story's purpose. Consider if the reflective moments could benefit from stronger dialogue or subtle plot developments to enhance their engagement. Are these necessary pauses, or potential areas for tightening? |
| Final Scene (60): Resolution | The final scene (60) shows high scores but a moderate emotional impact. This could suggest a potentially unresolved or ambiguous ending. Explore whether this is intentional. If so, ensure it aligns with the intended narrative effect. If not, re-examine this section to strengthen its overall impact. |

The writer consistently showcases skill in crafting nuanced character interactions and dialogue-driven scenes. However, there's a recurring need for further development in specific areas to elevate the screenplay's overall impact and complexity.
